One of the things about life that none of us can really appreciate is the fact that we're all being judged. From the moment we enter day care or even before that for some of us we all have the microscope held up against us and close scrutiny of our behavior, actions, and interactions. So is not surprising that we as humans tend to judge the things that we like. Whether that is movies or music; fashion or jewelry, we’re always laying judgment on things.
So it’s no surprise that there is such a thing as diamond grading. Diamond grading is a procedure for quantifying loose diamonds. Your piece is placed with the point sticking up and is examined with a loupe or a gemologists tool for grading things like blemishes and assessing color and cut at a magnitude of times 10.
There are five series of color grades in descending letter order which talk about color grade of your diamond. Starting at D, E, or F which is colorless and is the most ideal cut diamond we move to G., H., I., J. which is in nearly colorless. After that the colors get decidedly less desirable. K, L., or M. is faintly tinted with a hint of yellow; and, oh, P., Q., R is a lightly tinted color of usually yellow that is visible in plain sight. Finally S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z is the least desirable color grade and this consists of a yellow to brown tint which is plainly visible.
If you'd like to know more about diamond grading there are a number of resources which are available for your use. Diamond grading is to a measurable standard which is upheld by the GIA and is constantly under review. If you would like to find out about getting a diamond grading chart for your own use, that is something that is very easily attainable. Diamond grading charts are available in printed books or manuals, online, and there is probably even a diamond grading chart at your local jeweler.
While some may consider the diamond grading system to being sort of arbitrary there is the other one prevailing reminder that price and demand drives quality so if nobody wants brown or yellow diamonds or diamonds which are imperfect for whatever the reason than they will of course be graded on the lower end of the spectrum.
There are a number of ways for you to become familiar with how to grade diamonds. The first way would be to obviously learn the grading system and read up as much he can. If there is any way for you to apprentice with any jeweler in your area, that may be an advantageous thing to do. There is much to be learned from jewelers and they have a great amount of wisdom to share to an eager young mind.
